Hynology and HYCCO have joined forces in a collaborative project to qualify two critical fuel cell components for mobility applications. The partnership focuses on Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) developed by Hynology, and Carbon Fiber Bipolar Plates technology produced by HYCCO.

  • Project funded by the French Government as part of France 2030 operated by Ademe
  • Project Duration: 24 months
  • Funding: 3.34M€.

Project Objectives

The primary goal of this collaboration is to validate and optimize these key components for use in fuel cell systems, particularly targeting heavy mobility applications. By combining their expertise, the two companies aim to enhance the performance, durability, and efficiency of fuel cells.

MEA and bipolar plates, which account for 92% of fuel cell manufacturing costs, will deliver 30% more power density than current solutions, providing customers with a turnkey solution of unprecedented cost-effectiveness. As the seamless integration of these components is crucial to guaranteeing the fuel cell’s performance and durability, the project will be decisive for both companies as well as for the hydrogen value chain.

This collaborative effort will be decisive for Hynology, HYCCO, and the broader hydrogen value chain:

  • It positions both companies at the forefront of fuel cell innovation
  • Accelerates the adoption of advanced fuel cell technology across various sectors
  • Catalyzes growth and maturation of the hydrogen economy

Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA)
The MEA, developed by Hynology, is a crucial part of the fuel cell where the electrochemical reactions occur. It consists of a proton exchange membrane sandwiched between catalyst layers and gas diffusion layers.

Carbon Fiber Bipolar Plates
They offer several advantages over other materials: increased power density (up to 7 kW/kg), extended fuel cell lifetime (>30,000 hours), significant weight reduction (50% lighter than metal-based fuel cells).
